Citi has appointed Wenjie Zhang as Citi country officer and banking head for China and president and executive director of Citibank ( China ) Co, Ltd, subject to regulatory approvals.

Zhang will act as the lead Citi representative and as the single, coordinated face in the mainland China market, leading the team to deliver the full value of the bank’s network to clients and foster strong regulatory relationships and robust risk control.

He will join Citi in July. To be based in Shanghai, Zhang will report to Marc Luet, Citi’s head of Japan, Asia North and Australia, and banking.

With 30 years’ experience in corporate and institutional banking, Zhang was most recently the president of China and Shanghai branch manager for Bank of America China.

Prior to that, he was co-head of global banking and executive vice president at HSBC China, after stints at J.P. Morgan, Citi and Crédit Agricole CIB. He started his career in Sinochem Group, performing finance and treasury functions.

Zhang holds a master of business administration from York University’s Schulich School of Business in Toronto, Canada, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Citi first opened for business in China in 1902 and was among the first global banks to incorporate locally in 2007. Leveraging its global network, Citi China supports the needs and aspirations of Chinese corporates going global, as well as global multinationals expanding their footprint in China. The bank helped Chinese clients raise around US$20 billion last year in equity and debt capital outside of China.
